Course Details

Overview

The Hellenic Culture Centre supports your learning by organising this special course on writing and reading in Greek. Many people have learned Greek through listening and through conversation with Greeks, however they do not know how to read and write, and they cannot express themselves in written form of language. Writing seems to be the most demanding activity in Greek, as it involves spelling (with all six -i-, two -o-, and two -e-, plus more than four diphthongs), and students find it hard to locate grammatical and spelling mistakes, mistakes of syntax and expression, differences between expressions, and common mistakes, idioms, etc.

Through a series of activities in reading and writing students learn how to write what they already speak, and write it the right way and with the appropriate style for every communicative situation. Grammar, vocabulary, and syntax rules are being taught only upon your mistakes. Students practice writing, and they even practice finding their own personal style in writing, through guided activities on different genres.

Intended for

This special programme is addressed to:

  • Students wishing improve their writing effectively at any level of Greek
  • students who live in Greece and want to write and read what they can tell in everyday communication
  • candidates to sit the Exam for the Certificates in Greek as an extra preparation
Methodology

The Online courses are given via the educational platform Moodle, where all relevant learning materials are uploaded (activities on the alphabet, short useful texts to read – bills, registration forms, receipts, contracts, hand written texts- activities for spelling, activities for writing), and via synchronous Skype meetings held once or twice weekly.

During synchronous meetings students practise reading and writing and the teacher explains, corrects and organises their work. During the week the students study on the platform where they can do reading and writing activities, prepare written texts useful for their life and work, and send their work to their teacher, who corrects within 48 hours at most.

Self-tuition asynchronous online facilities are not available. Enrolments are only accepted for taught classes meeting for at least one hour weekly. The use of the platform is free of charge as an asynchronous mode of learning.

The goals are set together with the students and the hours and days of the lessons and homework are agreed based on their personal schedule.
