Course Details
Overview
Speaking and writing seem to be the biggest challenges for Greek adolescents today. They are far from having literature reading in their daily schedule, and they only chat online while many of them devote their free time to playing video games.
At every level of the Greek education system, young students cannot easily answer reading comprehension questions, and they cannot even read correctly and fast enough. Moreover, they cannot produce a written text with adequate characteristics according to the communicative situation they are in.
The Hellenic Culture Centre supports speaking and writing of adolescent native speakers of Greek and bilingual children, 12-16 years old. Through a series of activities in writing, reading, and speaking young students learn to use appropriate language structures and to express themselves in writing and orally.
Intended for
- Adolescents 12-16 years old native Greek speakers who wish to improve their written and spoken Greek while they participate in a course that takes some elements from the national curriculum, but expands its activities to what students want and need to learn
- Young bilingual adolescents who live in Greece, and speak Greek as a second language
- Young bilingual expatriates 12-16 years old who live abroad
Methodology
The Online courses are given via the educational platform Moodle, where all relevant learning materials are uploaded (texts, language activities, photos, library, Forum, links to dictionaries and to videos), and via synchronous Skype meetings held once or twice weekly.
During synchronous meetings students practise speaking and the teacher explains, corrects and organises their work. During the week the students study on the platform where they can read texts, record their voice through the platform, do grammar and spelling exercises, do their writing tasks and send all their work to their teacher, who corrects within 48 hours at most.
Self-tuition asynchronous online facilities are not available. Enrolments are only accepted for taught classes meeting for at least one hour weekly.
The use of the platform is free of charge as an asynchronous mode of learning.
The goals are set together with the young students and the hours and days of courses and homework are agreed based on their personal schedule.
Content
Indicative contents of the Curriculum:
- The paragraph and written composition
- Common mistakes
- Grammar
- Speaking
- Writing
- Spelling
- Syntax
- Summarizing a text
- Books and dictionaries
Young learners find topics of their interest and discuss based on the Socratic Dialectics in order to develop critical thinking. They also read and narrate literature and other books, and they comment on their classmates’ works.
They learn how to give feedback and how to appreciate logical thinking and structure their texts correctly. They discuss social matters and develop skills in expressing opinions and arguments, and in describing and narrating stories. The course does not follow the Greek School curriculum, although it integrates some topics from that.
