GLOSSA 2: Training Teachers in Online Greek Language Teaching

The Hellenic Cultural Center is participating in the research project “GLOSSA 2 – Training Teachers in Online Greek Language Teaching”, approved by the European Commission as a continuation of the successful “GLOSSA 1” project. The first phase of the program developed teaching methodology and materials for levels C1 and C2 in Greek.

Project Goals

The project aims to use Greek as a model to develop a methodology for teaching other less widely spoken European languages. One of its key objectives is to train teachers through a practical approach, utilizing an innovative three-phase technique:

1. Face-to-face training workshops

2. Online teacher training involving the observation of live and recorded Greek lessons

3. Practical teaching experience with real B1-level students

Another important goal is to promote the Greek language and increase the number of students learning Greek online. To achieve this, a comprehensive B1-level e-learning course will be developed and offered to students worldwide who wish to continue studying Greek online.

The program is particularly relevant during times of economic crisis, as the Greek government is unable to support Greek language teaching abroad by sending teachers to schools and Greek communities. Instead, this initiative provides a sustainable solution by training new educators in online Greek language instruction.

Moreover, the project will have a positive impact on Greek communities abroad, helping them offer high-quality lessons to their members while also strengthening ties with local populations who may wish to learn Greek. Additionally, this initiative will further promote Greek as one of the valuable, lesser-known European languages, increasing its appeal as a “language of the heart,” as described by author Amin Maalouf.
